HOSTEL FAQ's

What is a hostel?

Similar to a bed and breakfast, the hostel concept is well-known throughout Europe. Hostels provide simple, budget oriented, sociable accommodation where guests can rent a dormitory bed and share a bathroom and multi-use common areas.

What kind of people stay at a hostel?

People of all ages and nationalities frequent hostels. Generally, self-sufficient people who like saving money, meeting people and who require minimal frills are well-suited for hosteling.

Who should not stay at a hostel?

People who prefer privacy, require absolute quiet to sleep or are uncomfortable with different types of people (in close quarters) will likely be unhappy at a hostel. Additionally, those who snore, keep odd hours or have habits/traits that some might find offensive may not be embraced by other hostelers.

How many people can the hostel accomodate?

The hostel consists of 3 small sleeping rooms each with 2 single beds. One person is allowed per bed, so each room would have no more than 2 people, and the total maximum occupancy would be 6. A guest has the option of renting both beds (if available) thereby making a room “private”.

Are there any curfews or lock-outs?

No. There is 24 hour access, with respect for quiet hours.

Is there a hostel kitchen?

There is not a kitchen, but you have access to all the ammenities of the inn, including the dining room which has a refrigerator, microwave etc. (see amenities page)

What other policies do you have for the hostel?

All of our regular Old Clark Inn policies also apply to the hostel. Please refer to our policy page for details.

MARLINTON, WV FAQ's

How far are you from Snowshoe Ski Resort?

It is 22 miles from Marlinton to the base of the mountain, which translates to a 35-40 minute drive all the way to the parking area at the Top of the World.

What is Marlinton like?

It is a genuine "small town" - not a tourist town. The main street is only 3 blocks long and the population is less than 1000.

Are there restaurants?

5 locally owned and operated eating establishments in walking distance of the inn, and others within a short drive. The only chains we have are Subway and Dairy Queen. Fine dining is available seasonally in the Snowshoe area.

Is there a grocery store?

A convenience store in walking distance and a small market a mile up the road. We have no supermarket chains...the closest Walmart is a one hour drive!

Is there shopping?

Most of your daily necessities can be purchased locally. You won't find much in the way of souvenirs, antiques etc. but you will find a couple interesting old-time retailers.

What about entertainment?

Pocahontas County is known for its wild beauty and outdoor activities such as bicycling, hiking, fishing, boating, bird watching, motorcycle touring, scenic drives, cross-country and downhill skiing. There is little nightlife off of Snowshoe Mountain but we do have a local arts venue...The Pocahontas County Opera House features various performances approximately twice per month. Cinemas, bowling etc are an hour away in Lewisburg.

What other services are available in/near town?

ATM, auto and motorcycle repair, bicycle repair, bicycle and canoe rental, churches, hardware, gas station, laundromat, liquor store, movie rental and post office.

What else should I know about the town?

What it lacks in ammenities, it makes up for in old-fashioned small town charm. We have seen the good folks in this town come to the aid of a stranded or troubled visitor on more than a few occasions...even coming to the rescue on their day off and/or refusing compensation.
